Eyewear brand building starts before the optical fair

Too many independent eyewear brands think their brand is built on the optical fair floor. And they’re wrong! Eyewear brand building actually starts long before that.

Let me sketch the typical picture playing out at optical fairs: a founder who has a booth on expensive ground is standing proudly next to the brand’s collection. Hoping any of that will catch the eye of anyone with decision-making power. And when a storeowner finally stops at the booth, the founder or agent will tell them exactly what the brand stands for, where the eyewear is made, with premium materials, and what model of the collection sells best. …very passionately, meaning every word. Only to watch the storeowner smile politely, thank them and drift back into the aisle.

The order will come later, they tell themselves. And it rarely does.

Every fair, the same few brands get immediate attention. The rest rents floorspace and starts from zero. Why?

Why every brand blurs together

Most eyewear brands think the collection is the brand. So they build new models, source good materials, shoot clean product on a plain background, and bring the same handful of words every other stand is saying at the same time. Premium. Handmade. An eye for detail.

However, this is all true. It’s also interchangeable. That is the blur. Every brand has made itself sound like the one next to it.

The few that get immediate attention think the other way around. The brand comes first, and the collection lives inside it. They built a world long before the doors opened, so they own their booth already looking like themselves.

Eyewear brand building is the work a booth cannot do

A Brand is built outside the fair, by building a brand world. Out of the founder’s own vision and conviction, in a consistent style, voice, and a story made for the people it’s meant for. And visualized in all the places a booth can never reach.

Until the brand feels like a place, where your ideal customers quietly want to belong. That is eyewear brand building.

And here is what changes everything at the fair itself. A brand with a world uses those three days to confirm what’s already true. The storeowner walks up already knowing them, already wanting them, and the booth simply closes a door the brand opened months ago with their visual brand.

A brand without a world uses the fair to shortcut their way in. Which leaves them hoping.

The fair doesn’t build the brand. It rewards the one that already did the work.

Make them want your brand before the fair

Building a brand world through visual branding is what I do. This means creating photo and video that makes your target audience want to live the life, that they can have with your eyewear. Or at least have the idea that they can.

Your frames are good. That was never the question. The question is whether your brand reaches the storeowner in all the months that the booth can’t.

Eyewear brand building is about building the world before the fair, and becoming the brand with the immediate attention.
